hello it is me again...Ariella, and i realise i made a few mistakes on the signing. i may be thirteen but i write poetry and i believe myself to be slightly more mature then most my age. u r a fantastic being mr. mclean, and i have the upmost respect for you. here is a poem i wrote. could you please send me advice or even a hello in email. bobs_carpenter_girl@hotmail.com please? well here is a poem for you. and before you read it i would like to explain that i am not a depressed child. i write to express myself..i am almost positive you understand! :) here it goes... I dont know
As I sit in the corner, My tears freeze with anxiety, And the memories I play in my head, Play over and over again, And I realize I hate you, But I love you, Id die for you, Id kill you, When I kiss the ground, Of a thousand deaths I think of you, When I cry upon a greedy hand, I lie to you and myself, When I fly, and kiss the purple sky of a brisk morning, I betray you, Now I know, You want me here, Trapped between what u want and what I do, I hate you, But Id die for you.
MY LOVELESS PATH
Do you ever get that secret hope? That thing's will be okay, Do you every wish upon a star, That things will go your way, Do people always tell you? Youre dumb, you just dont know, Even though you know much more, What you reap is what you sow. If loving is of virtue, I guess fighting is too, Is that why disaster follows, When people say I do? The question is what is love? And why does it exist? If it makes us fight and hurt, And cloud our views with mist. So I turn away from love, Yet still hoping that its true, Because if I have ever came even close to love, I know that its with you. But still the curtains of a future, Close as they always will, And all there is, is that hanging hope, And rain on the window sill. Love and hate so very different words, Yet so very much the same, Funny how those two little words, Can make you go insane. Maybe Im just better off, If I put my heart aside, And let my future and my hate, Finally decide . My loveless path.
thank you once again, please reply love Ariella

Dear Don, I have been painting this evening, and was emotionally ambushed by a lovely and faithful song to the creative personality."Vincent", as sung recently by Josh Groban. For years I have remembered that you spoke clearly and eloquently of the whys and how we need to paint. Still moving after all these years.
I am a professinal painter and modestly successful but more famous because of the process, which is Painting with my fingers, because of difficulty holding a brush. When you are different than the norm it sometimes give you unexpected courage. This song in particular leaves me wanting more songs of the rest of the family of painters. Thanks. www.q-cross.com

Dear Mr. McLean
Would you please view the Chevrolet Chavelier ad that uses "Bye-Bye American Pie". In the ad, a young man drives towards towards the beach where a young woman is waiting. He is singing your song. When he gets to the line"today is the die I die", he parks the car, says to he"let's go" and they walk towards the water. The line from Chevy is "Here to the end". Please, see this ad.
Thank you.

Don, Just want to somehow express to you how much your music means to me. I hit 40 last year (2001) and finally did what I've always wanted to do... cut an album. In the credits I thanked you as my biggest musical influence. It has also been continuously metioned to me without any prompting that I have an affinity with you... that is your voice and your songwriting style. It's almost like I was born in the wrong era era or something. My number one favorite song of all time is your song 'Vincent'. So, I'd like to thankyou from the heart for your depth... And even though I may never have a chance to meet you, I feel like I know your because I've met your music. I could say I'm your biggest fan but that just doesn't cut it... so just plain old 'thank-you Don'!

To Mr. McLean, Sir, your song American pie has a special significance for this old Viet Nam vet--but when recently visiting my fighter pilot son in Korea, I was surprised to find that each Friday night at the O'club-it's played and the pilots dance to it in acirlce--with minor changes to the lyrics--after "this'll be the day that I die"-they all yell out "Hell No"

Dear don, You are the man, i love your music and it's truely inspired me to create music of my own. I'm 18 years old and i have the best story about Americian Pie. It's truely is my dads favorite song ever. So he had a huge 50th bday party with like 250 people there and secretly before the party i got my teacher to teach my the song on guitar and then i memorized it, and the lyrics. Then at the party near the end as a suprise I sang it and played it, i was in like 8th grade, with one of the best local bands ever backing me up. It was so amazing. My dad loved it and we have a picture of him and his two brothers locking arms and dancing and crying. It was a moment in our family that will always last. Every time "Americian Pie" plays on the radio i think of my dad and that great moment and every time it comes on when we're together we belt it out in unision. I love it. So thank you for touching and inspiring me and through your music bringing happyness. We saw you at the mount baker theater a few years ago in Bellingham, WA. It was awsome. I heard you might be moving here, that would be sweet. If so drop me a line and meeting you could be my dad's best birthday present ever. Thanks for all of your great music.

DEAR, DON My name is Jim Glazier, from 4308 42 AVE. #20 Rock MTN.. House Alberta, Canada . And I need the help of someone with great influence over people and the resources to convince people they can protect there property. I am not trying to get a hand out, but perhaps some kind of business venture where we both can make money. I have been interested in vehicle security since 1997. I get sick when I hear of peoples property stolen , damaged , and even lives lost from such a preventable problem as car theft. I have looked at many vehicle security devices and there weakness, and endeavored to build a device that is easy to install and also user friendly, and very difficult to remove. I have built prototypes, and have used one on my vehicle for three years even in big cities, and always felt comfortable that my car would always be there where I parked it. I also installed one on an old truck in an auto wreaker and it took three big men 4min. 56 seconds to remove it, only by braking the floorboard because of too ridged a base. This has since been redesigned to be flexible. It was encouraging to see one person could not remove it. It is loose enough installed, that it cannot be cut with a hacksaw, since it is made with good strong steel. The lock cannot be frozen because it is incased with steel and a small air space. These men ! tried with hammers and feet to remove it and only exhausted themselves. Since joy rides and theft of vehicles for the purpose of committing a crime are the main reasons for general auto theft, I know this will be a very good and secure type of vehicle theft deterrent. I have a U.S. patent and applied for an international patent with the help of a company in Ireland, who have done up for me a confidential research report, on North America, and Europe and are at this time trying to find manufactures all around the world that would be interested in building this device that I call "Brake Lock. There is some simple electronics that serve as a trade mark, as well as takes care of the brake light problem. I recently have had interest from England and Illinois and hope to get a positive response from them. Auto theft is a huge problem everywhere. I know it will make a difference. But it will only make a difference if people will use it. If I could give you more information that might convince you, perhaps you may be interested in being a part of this venture. .P lease, if you want more information or have questions please get in touch with me at my E-Mail address ( cadillacjim @msn.com) Thank you, I look forward to hearing from you . Don Mclean is in my opinion the best singer/ songwriter of all time. His original version of American Pie is much better than maddonas' version. I don't think that she should have released her cover version because of all the history behind the song wich Mclean incorporated

Don, I thoroughly enjoyed your recent long-awaited appearance in Phoenix on Friday night, November 2. It was my first time to visit the famed Celebrity Theater. Thanks for the enjoyable performance by your band as well. For me, it was an early birthday celebration (mine is November 3), and I could not have found a better place to be!

If they only knew. What visions run through the mind. You have taught me well. Of Vinvcent, and others. Of pain and Love all mixed together. How the children speak. As if, they could write for themselves. Or how to spell. Fragmented our souls, speak for themselves. I wish you really knew just how big a fan I am of yours. But it doesn't really matter. The words we all write are only written for ourselves. If the others see something there, then maybe some good, or light has been shifted into the pattern of their little lives.

I am a long time fan of your musical style. I do enjoy all of your songs that made it to become hits in the '70's. But American Pie definitely had the most impact on me. There was a version of American Pie that the local radio stations in the Tampa / St. Petersburg, Fl radio stations played. It was a long version of American Pie. I was never really sure whether you authorised this or it was publicity stunt for certain d.j's. It seemed like you authorised it because it was factual and not filled with all sorts of b.s and hype. Somehow I would like to get a copy of this. If it actually was your work, then you would be able to help me out. Please help me out if you have the time. gerardac@concentric.net Thank you. Hi, there,
I very much enjoyed your shows at the Marin County Fair on July 2...I was so happy that you played my very favorite song, "Crossroads". I am reviewing that song after a long absence in the context of "the power of now" - the song speaks so eloquently to the power and importance of presence. I was also moved to tears by "Vincent". My sincere condolences on the passing of Chet Atkins; your friend, and friend of your music.
Thank you for two wonderful performances, and for revisiting Marin County - I never pegged you for a "Point Reyes guy", but I can see it now! Thanks also to "your boys". Hell of a couple of shows, in hell of some hot weather.
Best regards from a longtime admirer,

Hello Don. Just wondering if you have played the banjo for as long as you've played the guitar? What tuning do you use for Babalon? I'm going to take up the banjo pretty soon, and would this be hard to start out with as a song? Really enjoy your album Solo. I just love songs when they are done with just one person and an instrument. What kind of banjo do you use on that album, an open-backed or a big heavy resonator banjo? On the song Homeless Brother, there's a line about children knowing that Jesus was a lost hobo. Just wondering if that is a statement about your beliefs? I mean no offense, but just wondering about that line. Well, thanks a lot, and if you could get around to replying, why that would be swell. Thanks a lot. Matthew matthewbullis@runbox.com

Hi Don,
Hope all is well with you and yours.
Love your music, particularly the songs from Chain Lightning. Have a few questions, regarding Mickey Newbury:
1. Are you familiar with Mick's music?
2. I think your voice and style are perfectly suited to cover several of his songs. Have you considered this?
I have written an article on Newbury("TCB") published last year in Goldmine. If you wish, you could read it at www.mickeynewbury.com (go to Articles.)
Take care and thanks a million for the beautiful music. I appreciate it.

My two brothers and I live in 3 states and just don't have the opportunity to do fun things together. During an April visit to the North Carolina mountains, I heard a radio commercial for the June 9th concert at the Peace Center in Greenville, SC. Well ..... of us 3 siblings, we have a June 7 birthday, a June 8 birthday, and a June 10 wedding anniversary. AND, we're all within easy driving distance of Greenville, SC. AND, our parents live just outside of Greenville. So, the big sister ordered tickets for all 3 siblings and our spouses.
And what a terrific time we had! The concert was a delight! "Vincent" sent chills up my spine. My guitar-playing brothers loved "Under the Double Eagle." And what can I say about "American Pie"?
Thank you so much for a wonderful evening that none of us will ever forget.

Don Mclean, I cant believe I am messaging you, I am probably your biggest fan. I have pictures of you around my room of you and I listen to your music day after day. well i am only 12 years old and only dream of meeting you. In school we had to write a goal to accomplish by the time we are 64 and my number one goal was to meet you. Even my friends now know alot about you beacuse when they come over thats all the music you hear. You wouldnt believe how much i love you and your music. You are the most talented music artist in the world. My heart is beating so much while i am writing you this. Even some of my teachers said that they would try their hardest to try and find a way for me to contact you. I wish this was an e mail that i knew you would get but since this is just a bbs i highly doubt you will ever get my message. But i have tryed forever to try and get your e mail so this was my last resort and i am not going to give up the chance of writing you a message. All i want is a e mail back from YOU, not someone who writes it for you pretending it is you. My e mail is jazzdancerone@hotmail.com . Please e mail your biggest, youngest fan back love lauren

Mr. Mclean, after reading the postings here, I've come to realize that I may not be your biggest fan. Still, I would like to express my praise to you and your writings. So many songs get forgotten I can see. But I'm sure you haven't forgotten them. My father brought me up on your music and as I became a songwriter in my own right, he turned my head to "Don Mclean short of American Pie" as he said. "Magdolin Lane" and "On the Amazon" come to mind on those late night writing sessions when I needed a mentor. I do not require correspondence but it would be appreciated. Thank you for the little stuff not everyone catches. Owen Tiner to_elvis@hotmail.com

Dear Mr. Mclean,
I love your song, American Pie. I used to always hear it on the radio. But I went to Best Buy* and I bought it. It is the best song in the world! My name is Frank. I live in Waukee, Iowa. I hope you are very proud of your work. Just again, I love your song. Thanks for reading my message and good luck! Love,

Hello dearest Don!
Thanks for your contributions to a better world! At least emotionally! I`ve just got my hands on your greatest hits on cd. Very good! Q: How come "Winterwood" ain`t on that favorite list?! I think it`s almost as good as Vincent, and maybe one of the greatest love songs ever! Last year I got my hands on a LP in good shape - I was thrilled! Last Q: Where can I get my hands on your lyrics? Would really like to learn some of your songs - I think I`ve got a grooving roots-artist in my stomach!
Thanks, and best of wishes Kurt Mogstad, age 32, Norway. kurtmogstad@enitel.no

Stop pestering Don with trivial questions. If you want lyrics or tabs go to www.americanpie2000.com. If you want to know what American Pie is about you will have to use your imagination. It is true art and as such it requires reflection and thought. It will be different for everyone. If he wanted everyone to know exactly what it's about, he would have made it obvious. Don- "Vincent" is astounding, thank you. L.Wright. partiallyhere@hotmail.com

Don,
Just saw you live in concert at Troy Music Hall. Great show, too bad you spoiled it at the end by taking a half hour to come out after the show and then rushing the autographs. I overheard you turn to one of the clerks and say "Let's get this line going so I can leave." Real nice attitude. We may not be your biggest show, but we are paying your bills. A little appreciation. I looked very forward to meeting you, but after tonight the stars are NOT seeming so bright anymore...
I love your music, but I don't know if I like the man behind it...

But when I saw & heard you perform it in Central Park w/Garth it was even Better than the original (not Garths version, your's)..It was like the Song had taken hold of your emotions. And after 20+ years of performing it, the notes now clearly resonated from deep within your soul.
Am I alone here people? Or do you also think that Don should release it again like in Central Park!

Dear Don, It might be a shame, but, although I am 54 years old now (devorced, woman), I had never heard of you before last summer. I met an American man 1,5 year ago --we were both biking-- on the ferry from England to Holland. We promised to see each other again, and after a year of correspondence we met in America for a week holiday in the Adirondacks. In the car to the north he sang a song for me, which I vaguely recognised. I only remembered the melody, and back home in the Netherlands I hummed it for my friend and she called your name. The song was Vincent. I discovered your music, a bit late, but now I really love it! Several of your songs reach something deep inside me. I often listen to your music. And for me your song Vincent embodies the memory of a romantic week with a man I fell in love with. Something I did not expect anymore at my age! I do not know where the future will bring us, but your song "if you can dream" do sometimes bring tears to my eyes. I thank you for your beautiful music. There is no need to mail me back, I am not used to do things like this, but I wanted to tell you this. Adri adribloem@hotmail.com

Hey Don, I just want to thank you for making the song "American Pie." It is the anthum for my family. We go to the mountains every year and every year we sing your song around the campfire. The song means so much to us. It is very touching. Every kid in the family knows almost all the words even the youngest who is only 7. No matter what kind of music the kids in the family like they always like "American Pie." It may be the only song of its kind they like but they like it and sing along everytime. Thank you so much for creating it. You never know how much it really means to us. Thank you!
Love Ya, Alisha P.S. If for any raeson you would like to write me back (you don't have to cause I'm not expecting) you can e-mail me at Sixergrl290@email.com. Thanks again! Good luck in the future!

Hi Don,
This is a longshot, but does a town with the name of Magnetawan, Ontario mean anything to you?
It was summertime about 18-20 years ago and my brother, his wife and myself were at the jam packed local watering hole, having a few beverages. We three were pretty young then, about 19 or so, sitting there next to you and your sister and another dark haired fellow who was married to her. At closing time we got invited to go back to their cottage for a few drinks and some fine music. The cottage was on a very small lake, half of it under construction and we sat around on lawn chairs, late into the night drinking Labatt'sBlue while having a private concert with this incredible musician strumming a heavenly 12-string. That night it was revealed that the man on the guitar was Don McLean, author of American Pie. Naturally, we were deep in disbelief. I guess we were just too young to believe that such a "famous" person could ever be in anyplace that remote.
I remember less and less of that evening almost 20 years ago and the reason I'm writing is to ask if you remember anything like that, if you've ever been to a small hotel in the northern Ontario town of Magnetawan, and did your sister live on a lake then. Do you remember that night too? We stayed at the cottage pretty late into the night and the next morning we realized that Mary forgot her purse. We barely found our way back to retrieve it. In the light of day I asked the dark haired man if you were in fact Don McLean the songwriter and he once again assured me you were he. Then, he pointed out onto the lake that quiet Sunday morning to the man bombing around in the little outboard, making a lot of racket and said it again, that is Don McLean!
It sure would be nice to know after 20 years if we were being had, or if we were really partying it up with the man himself.
In a side note, last year my wife and I were in Arles with the echos of Vincent playing in our hearts and minds. It was a very special time for us.
By the way, I found this site as a result of a news story saying that American Pie is the Rock Song of the 70's. Congratulations to you, I agree.
Is is possible to get an email from you to let me know that we did meet all those years ago? Many thanks for your music.

Mr Mclean, if you will hear another misinterpretation of your song American Pie i'd like to offer mine: the song is obviously about the spread of gonorrhea in the world. as the occurrence of teenage sex increases, obviously so does the spread of disease. American Pie is the feeling of a..well, i won't digress. bye bye is you saying goodbye to it because you dont want to spread anymore gonorrhea. the rest of the song is basically just babbling on about nothing. t the fact that you don't share with people the true meaning of your song makes you a big jerk and makes me want to say thanks for a whole lot of nothing.

Hi Don, My name is Sandi and I live in Central New Jersey. I've loved your music as long as I can remember (my Mom played American Pie until the grooves wore out!). Your songs have become a big part of my life. When I'm sad and need a lift I sing Vincent, when I'm driving carpool I sing American Pie. We always play your albums last at parties so everyone can hum a great tune on their way home. American Pie has become a sort of anthem for Rick (my honey) and I. When Rick's brother died in 96 (at age 20), we really understood the day the music died. I don't know if you follow Nascar Racing, but we do. We are devastated and saddened by the loss of Dale Earnhardt this Sunday. I've spent 6 years of Sundays with this guy - my heart hurts. Rick has a gig on Saturday in North Brunswick, NJ. They want to dedicate a tune to Dale (I don't think they can pull it off without a shit-load of tears). I'd like to ask your help - Elton re-did it for Diana, could you please re-do it for Dale? Sorry I rambled, I appreciate your consideration - and consider you a friend. Thanks for a lifetime of enjoyment!

Dear Don McLean I love your song "American Pie". I know you probably hear that from everybody, but I really enjoy it. I plan on singing your song at my school talent show. I love to sing. My dream is to one day become a singer. Do you have any tips? If you do I'd really appreciate it. Please write me at goldeneyejbo2001@yahoo.com Thank you. Your fan forever, Jonathan M

Hello Mr McLean,
the song "American Pie" is the best song I've ever heard. My favourite hobby is collecting old songs, discs and so on. I think this song describes the reality of the development of the music after the death of Buddy Holly. But what about the music today? I can't stand it any more! I think the music is still dying. I becomes worse and worse! When I hear Madonnas version of "American Pie", I might cry! I don't think that she knows what she's singing there. In my opinion she's ruined the song! I want to tell you again: American Pie was the best song ever written and it will ever be! I listen to it 4 till 5 times per day. When I read the interpretations I got some tears into my eyes. No other song told us so much about music or even the feelings (the destiny) of people who liked the rock'n'roll of the 50's.

I'm 49 years old and to my pleasure, my teenage children have a great appreciation for some of the music of the 60's,70's,and 80's. I have recently shared your greatest hits album with my 15 year old. She plays it over, and over and over. She just told me during a ride in the car that the only performers she would like to see in concert are Jamiroqui and Don Mclean. I'm so thrilled. Do you still perform? If so please forward a schedule. Thank you for responding but THANK YOU especially for enriching our lives with your music. M.M. tmandbl@mbusa.net

Don,
As a struggling acoustic guitarist/songwriter I am very interested in how you go about writing songs. Do you go for lyrics first and then a melody, or do you write lyrics to a melody. Just wondered what works best for you, and how you went on. I am really struggling to put any kind of music that I am happy with to my lyrics. Any advice/experiences you could share would be greatly appreciated Jason jasonmiddleton@strayduck.com

'Vincent' is simply the most beautiful song ever written. The song and Van Gogh's 'Starry Night' match divinely, he should have heard it.

Hi Don,
Out here at Snowbird we are having a heated disagreement about the real meaning of your song "Miss American Pie". Some instructors at the mountain think that it refers to the Big Bopper, Bob Dylan, etc. I, however, thought I recalled your saying the words just popped into your head at your concert at Temple Ambler in approximately 1976. Would you mind shedding just a single ray of sunlight to help us find clarity.
Thank you sincerely!

Hi,
I'm just 15 but I'm a big fan of you.
Does the Sentence "The day the music died" in Your American Pie really compare to the plane crash on february 3th 1959 when Buddy Holly, Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens died?

I would really like to know the words to "American Pie". I love that song and it reminds me of a friend of mine who died recently in a terrible car accident. I would be more than grateful if someone could email me the words to that song. My email address is zoe264@cs.com. Thank You, Amy

American Pie was a great song I'll leave it at that. I know it means a lot to alot of people myself included. Castles In The Air, Till Tomorrow, Winterwood, these are all great songs and these are the ones that mean the most to me. Thank you for making great music. I'm only 16 so I didn't live in that time which I consider unfortunate. I not only enjoy your music but your cause as well. By the way the verse in Castles In The Air about the cocktail generation is really touching. I admire the way you can put that picture with words. -Peter-DickRodeo@mailcity.com

Dear Don, I bought my first album when I was about 18 in 1973. Of course it was American Pie. I added another 4 or 5 to that one and saw your concerts in Sydney in about 74. My 17 year old son just bought me a "Best Of" CD and it revived a lot of great memories. I just wanted to say thanks for all the special music you put together over the years and I guess for remaining true to the cause. I'll run out and buy some of your later albums now and get back in touch with the magic. Regards Paul. Email is norsoft@dingoblue.com.au
